Dr Sean O'Kelly

Regional Medical Director - East of England

Dr Sean O’Kelly BSc MB ChB MSc DCH FRCA, Regional Medical Director – East of England.   Following degrees in Medicine and Psychology at Bristol University Dr O'Kelly undertook postgraduate training in paediatrics and anaesthetics at Southampton University Hospitals. He then worked at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor for six years as Associate Professor and Director of Paediatric Cardiac Anaesthesia.   On return to the UK in 1998, Dr O'Kelly worked as a consultant anaesthetist and held secondments with the National Clinical Governance Development Programme, the Modernisation Agency and the Department of Health as Associate Medical Director to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer.

Dr O’Kelly has worked as Interim Medical Director in North Devon, Medical Director at Salisbury Hospital and, in 2011, Medical Director at University Hospitals Bristol, the first acute Trust to move from Requires Improvement to Outstanding in one CQC inspection interval. He was appointed Medical Director for Professional Leadership at NHS Improvement in 2017 and Regional Medical Director for the East of England in 2019.

Dr O'Kelly has also completed a Master of Science degree in Strategic Management at the University of Bristol, chaired the Department of Health National Steering Group on Cosmetic Surgery Regulation and worked as a special adviser to the CQC, chairing a number of comprehensive inspections.
