Dr Jennifer Birch

Consultant in Neonatal Medicine

Dr Jennifer Birch MBChB MMedSci MRCPCH is a Consultant in Neonatal Medicine at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Trust. She has been the Neonatal Unit Clinical Director since June 2013. Her clinical special interests include neonatal nutrition, Necrotising Enterocolitis and other neonatal gastrointestinal conditions and she is a member of the national neonatal nutrition network. She has a keen interest in clinical management and leadership, previously completing the NHS change Leaders Course.  Recently, she successfully completed an MSc in Healthcare Leadership and in June 2017 received the NHS Leadership Academy Award in Senior Healthcare Leadership.

She represents medical and dental staff as chairperson of her Trust’s Local Negotiating Committee. She recently rejoined the Neonatal Critical Care Clinical Reference Group as one of the representatives for Central and East region. She has previously held departmental lead roles in Patient Safety, Risk management and Clinical Governance and was a core member of the East of England Perinatal Network’s Clinical Governance Group. Her quality improvement experience includes being a contributing author to the British Association of Perinatal Medicine national framework for practice for Neonatal Parenteral Nutrition and project medical Lead for the East of England Necrotising Enterocolitis Care Bundle; a regional quality improvement initiative.
